At Shirley Smith High School, the STEM Faculty provides students with a connected and purposeful learning journey that develops deep knowledge across Science, Mathematics and Technologies. Learning is carefully sequenced from Years 7 to 10, allowing students to progressively build conceptual understanding while making meaningful connections between disciplines. Students investigate scientific phenomena, develop mathematical reasoning, explore engineering and computational thinking, and apply design principles to authentic challenges. As knowledge becomes increasingly sophisticated, students move beyond understanding individual concepts to recognising how evidence, patterns, systems and innovation work together to explain and improve the world around them, preparing them for specialised senior pathways and future careers in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
Equally important is the development of practical skills that empower students to apply their learning with confidence and purpose. Across every STEM subject, students strengthen their ability to investigate, design, create, test, analyse, communicate and refine solutions using contemporary tools, technologies and industry-inspired processes. Skills developed in one discipline are intentionally reinforced and extended in others—from scientific investigation and mathematical modelling to coding, engineering design, digital manufacturing and precision craftsmanship—creating a cohesive program where learning is transferable, authentic and increasingly independent. Through this integrated approach, students become curious, connected learners who are equipped with the creativity, resilience, collaboration and problem-solving capabilities needed to thrive in further education, the workplace and a rapidly changing world.
