Mathematics at Shirley Smith High School empowers students to become confident, curious and capable problem-solvers who use mathematical thinking to understand and navigate the world around them. Across Years 7 to 9, students progressively develop their knowledge, reasoning and analytical skills through the interconnected study of Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Statistics and Probability. Learning is carefully sequenced to strengthen conceptual understanding, build mathematical fluency and encourage students to recognise patterns, make connections and apply their learning in meaningful and authentic contexts.
Our Mathematics program emphasises inquiry, collaboration and purposeful problem-solving, providing students with regular opportunities to investigate mathematical ideas, justify their reasoning and communicate solutions using appropriate mathematical language and representations. Learning encourages students to recognise the interconnected nature of mathematical concepts and to apply them across a range of real-world contexts.
